Bicycle history
Several inventors and innovators contributed to the development of the bicycle. Its earliest known forebears were called velocipedes, and included many types of human-powered vehicles. One of these, the scooter-like dandy horse of the French Comte de Sivrac, dating to 1790, was long cited as the earliest bicycle. Most bicycle historians now believe that these hobbyhorses with no steering mechanism probably never existed, but were made up by Louis Baudry de Saunier, a 19th-century French bicycle historian. However, the term hobbyhorse was later applied to the first documented ancestor of the modern bicycle, first introduced to the public in Paris by the German Baron Karl Drais in 1818.[citation...
Bicycle brake systems
Early bicycles such as the high wheeled penny-farthing bikes had no brakes as we would recognize them today. As the machines were fixed gear bicycles a rider could reduce speed by reversing the thrust on the pedals. Otherwise, a rider who wanted to stop quickly had to jump off the bike as it was moving. Unsurprisingly there were many accidents, some of them fatal, which limited the appeal of cycling mostly to young and adventurous men. The 1870s saw the development of the "safety bicycle" which was roughly the bicycle we would recognize today, with two wheels of equal size, initially with solid rubber tires. These were generally equipped with a front spoon brake and no rear brake, although with no...
A mountain bike, mountain bicycle (a.k.a. MTB) or ATB (All Terrain Bicycle) is a bicycle designed for mountain biking, either on dirt trails or other unpaved environments. In contrast, road bicycles aren't rugged enough for such terrain. Mountain bikes have fat, knobby tires for extra traction and shock absorption. In recent years front suspension has become the norm and full front and rear suspension is becoming increasingly common. Some mountain bikes are also fitted with bar ends on the handlebars, but with a recent trend in riser handlebars (as opposed to a flat straight handlebar) fewer riders use bar end extensions. The bikes normally have 26 in (559 mm) wheels although since 2002, some...
Influences
I think it was the Russian writer Tolstoy who said that the most significant revolutions were internal; in other words they happen individually and in your head. I can see what he meant, although if the old boy had been around in 1917 he might have bitten his lip.We tend to think of revolutions as being violent and bloody conflicts, which of course they are, the French, Russian and American Revolutions being prime examples. On the other hand, the Industrial Revolution, which, in the end was more far-reaching than any of the other contemporary revolutions, was on the whole, peaceful. At this point I have to do a little flag waving for Scotland. Well, I don't have to, but I'm going to. Three important...
Custom Motorcycles
A custom motorcycle is a unique motorcycle with the frame geometry or engine differing from standard motorcycles. They are individually produced in limited numbers in factories. Some motorcycle enthusiasts feel that a true custom bike is one that is built from scratch in a local garage or motorcycle shop. There are different types of custom motorcycles like road, cruisers and sports bikes. Custom road motorcycles are designed for the road with smooth tires and engines in the 250cc and over range. These bikes can run at great speeds of 160km/h to 200 km/h. Cruisers are custom motorcycles that mimic the style of the American machines from the 1930s to the early 1960s, like Harley-Davidson, Excelsior...
Mentioning Gary Fisher mountain bikes, without listing a number of Gary Fisher's achievements would be negligent to say the least! On the other hand, such a list will practically go on for ever...In fact, he is even credited with coining the term "mountain bike", as well as other terms such as the "bullmoose handlebar".Where did the Gary Fisher mountain bike start? In 1979 Gary and Charlie Kelly started a company called... well, MountainBikes. They manufactured and sold 160 'MountainBikes', in effect unleashing the sport called mountain biking. As can be expected Gary Fisher mountain bikes is synonymous with the development of many bikes through the years, from the Mt. Tom (1984), the Prometheus...
If you're planning to go mountain biking, one of the most basic things you need to be able to do is set your tire pressure correctly. A correctly inflated tire gives you better control and a smoother rise. If the tire pressure is too low, however, you're more likely to get a flat tire, as well as just having to work harder. A high tire pressure makes the bike hard to control and gives you a bumpy ride.Unfortunately there's no one tire pressure that you should use, because it varies according to your personal preference, the condition of the tire, the type of terrain and the condition of the trail. If you have a good quality bicycle pump you can regulate your tire pressure, and you also need an...
Getting into any triathlon transition program may require buying a triathlon bike, or for those bargain shoppers, a used triathlon bike, or bikes.Used triathlon bikes, like most other fitness training equipment, can probably be found at huge discounts, up to 50 percent off the original suggested retail price, at used bike stores who offer used triathlon bikes.First off, it is important to defining a triathlon bike. A triathlon bike is not unlike any other road bike in that it is suitable for all long distance riding.A triathlon bike is all about comfort and efficiency, and even looks like many ten-speed road bikes found in bike shops. The key to finding the best in used triathlon bikes is research...
Heavy-duty vehicles like trucks and sport utility vehicles are not the only ones that can haul cargo. It may be hard to believe, but motorcycles can be equipped with hitches as well. Motorcycle trailer hitches can be added to motorcycles to allow riders to haul up to several hundred pounds of materials. These are not the only type of motorcycle trailers available. Other trailers that attach to trucks are designed to haul the motorcycles themselves.Motorcycle trailer hitches can usually be attached to a motorcycle without making any alterations on the motorcycle itself. They are often secured around existing parts of the motorcycle. These trailer hitches are perfect for motorcycle riders taking a...
Walls 'R Us
Yesterday I had the pleasure of speaking at Rutgers University in front of around 150 high school students, which was a lot better than speaking behind them. The subject was humor columns, so it goes without saying that walruses came up multiple times. I mean, so many times that I completely lost track. Like, at least seven times. As is evident from my enthusiasm, I felt proud to include walruses because they are left out of so many aspects of society: sleep-overs, camping trips, and even games of Monopoly, which is a shame because I think they'd be pretty good at it...But then it happened. When the speech ended, I was approached by a girl who told me that her friend did not know what a walrus...

Many people like to go for long distance bike rides, I know I use to all the time. I have ridden from Los Angeles to Las Vegas to Reno and back to LA. I have ridden from LA up the coast to San Francisco and then up 101 and Highway 1 too. Riding long distance on a motorcycle is fun indeed. It is even more fun to test your skills on canyon roads far away that you have never ridden before. Of course if you are a motorcycle touring type chances are you like to ride a nice big comfortable bike.Of course whenever you get to your destination you are still on a big bike instead of a very fast maneuverable type. So, one option is to ride long-distance on a race bike instead. Indeed this can be a real...
Writing for Children: How I Broke Into the...
"Oh, I've always wanted to write for children!"I hear it all the time, whenever I reveal that I'm a published author of children's books. Always the starry-eyed look, the slightly wistful expression, and the inevitable, "That would be so fun!"Fun, indeed. All the fun of slaving over getting just the right word, of collecting rejection slips, of wondering if new authors really can break into the children's market. There is a way -- if you are willing to exercise some flexibility in your writing.Take a stroll through the children's non-fiction section of your local library and look at the newest books you see there: books on jet planes, hot air balloons, holiday crafts, bicycles, helicopters, race cars...
Embedded in the Ride
Since one of the things I love best is riding, I end up thinking a lot about it and about why I do it and why I like it. It seems to be one of those things that mystifies a lot of people. How many times have you been told how dangerous it is? Bikes are unstable, You don't have any protection. Drivers can't see you. If you go down you can die from the road rash even if you don't break anything. It goes on and on. The endless list of horrors. The stories about somebody who such and so knew who spent 6 months in traction, got turned into a vegetable, whatever.Well, it's all true. There are reasons why insuring your ride is expensive. Mostly having to do with medical costs and theft, I expect...
Mountain bikes can vary hugely in both price and quality, so it is important to be clear about what you are looking for when you go shopping and before you actually buy anything. There is a huge amount of choice so you need to know what you are looking for. If you want it for cross-country then you will need a light mountain bike, but even then you have more options. Do you want a full suspension or just the front shocks? Or would you like some thing a bit heavier such as a free ride? They are much tougher than the cross-country mountain bikes, but will also be a bit heavier to ride and you need to know if you really need it.Probably a good place to start is to find some mountain bike reviews, then...
From August 27 to September 6 I had four visitors from Europe in town: my brother Ewald, his wife Anneliese and their two friends - my neighbours from my home town in Austria, Luis and Isabella. You may wonder why this is such a big deal that I need to write about it.For me this was a huge deal since it was the first time that my brother came to visit me since I immigrated to Canada in 1986. Because of our 9 year age difference we didn't have a chance to spend that much time together when I was young, and my brother wasn't big on flying in the first place. But we hatched the idea of a joint vacation last year, during my first visit back to my home town in 8 years. So to me this was a very big deal...

A Collector's Guide to Buying Vintage Watches
Collecting vintage watches is a growing hobby in most parts of the western world. Men, particularly, are attracted by the romance and novelty of having a micro-engine on their wrist as both a time-teller and an image statement. One of the most frustrating aspects of collecting vintage watches is the number of fakes, frankenwatches and fraudsters one encounters in pursuit of this noble, but increasingly costly, passion. The comeback of the mechanical watch has drawn out all sorts of insects from under their rocks. The pursuit of one's passion for old timepieces will inevitably lead to numerous encounters with rogue repairers who charge house prices for inferior work, linear decendents of horse theives...

It will be set out in the format "Budget Mods", "Average Mods" and "Serious Tuner". Be advised that all CAG engines are different and performance increases vary on each bike. This guide should help you spend your money more wisely on the right modifications to get your bike going at it's full potential with the...
"If seeds in the black earth can turn into such beautiful roses, what might not the heart of man become in its long journey toward the stars?" G.K. ChestertonI woke up today with achy muscles and hamstrings that felt stretched to the max. Too much time at the gym? Too many miles on my bike?Nope. Just lots and lots of gardening. This week I joined hundreds of others who, pulled by Spring Fever, sunshine, and fresh air, flocked to nurseries and garden centers in search of the perfect annuals, shrubs, planters, and garden ornaments. And boy oh boy, did we find them. We came in droves, fellow gardeners and I, driving way too many miles in this gasoline-crisis-environment of ours, looking for the...
Bicycling Down Memory Lane
Many adults only remember riding a bike. They gave it up as they became older. Adults can and should take advantage of bicycle riding to get some exercise. Older folks may want to ride the large tricycle with a basket on the front.I remember my first bike. It was blue with a bell attached to the handlebars and when you worked the little tab back and forth with your thumb, you would hear a tinny ring. All the kids in my neighborhood had bikes, of course they were two speed bikes, stop and go, unlike the many different bikes that are available now.I don't remember any of us being overweight back then. We rode bikes rather than watching some silly or violent program on TV. In fact, there was no TV, no...
Road Bikes World Races: The Tour de France
The Tour de France is the BIG one; it’s the World cup and the Olympics all in one. It has it all, the high mountains, the wind swept northern planes and the heat of the south. It also has the world’s media, all the top teams and riders and millions of cycling mad fans watching. The other “Grand Tours” of Italy and Spain are as exciting, sometimes more so, but they don’t have the thing the Tour has, that unique Tour ness, that unique French ness. How it started. It all started in 1903, when the French daily paper, L’Auto wanted to sell more than its competitor, Le Vélo, who at that time was the only paper reporting on cycle racing. It was suggested to the...
Whether you're shopping for a bike or just admiring them, the first part you notice is probably the bicycle frame. The frame is the heart of a bicycle, as well as its art.Including the basically triangular core structure that supports both seat and handlebars and the extensions that attach to the wheels, the color and the geometry of the bicycle frame not only affects the beauty of the bike, but its strength and speed as well. The pleasure and success you derive from bicycle riding will be strongly impacted by having the right frame for your physique and your purposes.Naturally, your bicycle frame will take into dramatic account whether you ride primarily on roads or off-road.Not only are so-called...

A few months ago, a friend called to ask if I'd like to join her on a surfing lesson at Manly Beach in Sydney. Giving thought to my answer, two images flashed to mind. My thirty-nine year old battle weary body, attempting to hang five with a gaggle of bewildered foreign backpackers and pointing school kids. And more vividly, the look on the faces of my settled couple and married-with-kids friends if they knew I was even considering the idea.Having recently broken out of Sydney's Lower North Shore maximum suburbia and moved to fun-filled Manly beach, I had already become a prime suspect in their case against dirty-thirties attempting to recapture lost youth. It wasn't that I'd been caught driving a...
History of Gas Scooters
The first patents for scooters go back as far as 1921. The Razor scooter was later developed by Gino Tsai in Shanghai, Taiwan and became an instant hit with the public. It didn't take long for motor scooter popularity to expand all over the globe.Even before 1950 there were as many as 110,000 scooters on the road in Italy alone. It has been just a little over 50 years since the Vespa-Douglas Corporation in the UK sold their first gas scooters. The Douglas corporation was on the verge of bankruptcy when they first began selling their gas scooters. It was a big hit at the 1950 Motorcycle Show and saved the company from possible financial ruin. From 1950 to 1958 Vespa sold over 125,000 of their gas...

New Inventions I Would Like To See
Do you want to create money-making new inventions? Not me. I just like to dream them up. Here are some of the new ideas I would love to see created in reality. I hope a reader or two will do something with them.New Inventions For OutdoorsFree-standing tents without poles: The idea here is to have two inflatable sleeves that criss-cross over the top of a dome-style tent. Perhaps the rigidity would be insufficient for windy nights, but it's worth a try. Make them inflatable from inside, and you could quickly crawl inside and out of the rain to inflate it.Rail-runner bicycle attachment: This is a new invention I want to try, but one that will not be popular with the railroad companies. Wouldn't it be...

Choosing a Greenhouse
Greenhouses are available in all shapes and sizes, and take forms that vary from the conservatory to an enclosed glass porch around the front door. All are very useful for the hobby gardener and can accommodate a surprisingly large number of plants of all kinds.Modern greenhouses basically come in four forms; the lean-to, in which one wall is formed by the home or other substantial building; the span roof type, which is built on a dwarf wall and has a pitched roof; the Dutch light kind, formerly constructed of Dutch lights but in the modern form a glass-to-ground greenhouse, and the hexagonal type that is, broadly speaking, dome-shaped but with angular sides. All have their adherents, but it is...

After location bait and it's correct presentation is the most important factor governing success or failure. No matter how expensive your tackle is, if the fish won't bite you go home empty. Freshwater fish can go several months without eating, most marine fish can not, indeed many marine fish will die if not fed several times a day( a big problem for aquarists rather than anglers). Fish will eat a wide range of prey as cutting open the stomach will show but these are not always the best baits to use. Remember your bait is not the only piece of food in the water, the secret of angling is to make the fish ignore everything else and take your bait instead.Fish are not stupid, they want as much food as...

Plagiarizing the plaintive cry of Martial, I could say that there was a time when criminals and lawyers were kept more or less safely immured within the confines of politics or the judicial system, and if a citizen lived honestly and kept his nose clean, he could go about his business and despise them both. But times have changed. Lawyers are popping up like dandelions everywhere you look on television, and consequently, the Jurist Effect is wreaking havoc on society. The Jurist Effect is measured by a number called the venerability factor. Whenever the Jurists Effect is present, venerability takes a beating. For those who aren't familiar with the mathematics of it, the venerability factor of any...

Although experiments with rotary winged aircraft may be traced back to Leonardo da Vinci, successful flights were not achieved until the 1930s, and it was not until 1941 that the first practical, full size helicopter was built by lgor Sikorsky. Model enthusiasts are notably quick to emulate full-size aviation achievements, but were not as successful with rotary wing aircraft, and it was not until 1968 that the first fully controllable R/C model helicopter appeared, built by Dr. Dieter Schluter of West Germany. Many modellers were convinced that the single rotor autogiro would be an easier subject to tackle than the helicopter and were conducting their experiments along these lines, but in fact the...

Mountain Bike Parts
An average mountain bike has several additional features compared to a regular bicycle. These include larger number of gears, knobby tires, a wider handle bar and often some form of suspension for the tires. A mountain bike skeleton is called a chassis, a term that refers to the frame, fork and suspension as one unit. A chassis is generally constructed using lightweight materials such as carbon fiber. These bikes are often equipped with a large number of gears, with some models being equipped with as many as 27 gears. The lower range of gears helps mountain bikers climb steep hills or obstacles. Mountain bikes use sprocket technology that makes changing gears easier, and shift levers that...
9 Tips For Saving On Fuel Costs
Except for the selection of the car itself, most tips on saving fuel will not save that much by themselves on a day-to-day basis. However, combining several tips with time can result in significant weekly, monthly, and annual savings, depending on the type of car you drive, the way you drive it, how often you drive it, and where you drive it. Almost anyone should be able to cut fuel costs dramatically by implementing as many of the following tips as possible.1. Driving Habits: As a general rule, speed probably has the most effect on fuel economy. Most cars today begin to lose fuel effeciency significantly once you pass 55 mph.
